The All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST) was a bipedal walker used in rudimentary form by the Galactic Republic during the late Clone Wars and, later and more extensively, the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War. Colloquially known as a "chicken walker" because of its shape and walking motion, the AT-ST was a heavily armed light ground combat vehicle. It was equipped with a chin-mounted double medium laser cannon, a concussion grenade launcher on the starboard side of its head, 2 durasteel feet with claws, and a blaster cannon on the port side. It was designed to be a recon hit and run vehicle. It was vulnerable to heavy laser fire and missiles.

The chin guns had an effective range of two kilometres and were used for anti-vehicle attacks, while the blaster cannon and grenade launcher provided close-range protection. AT-STs were piloted by a crew of two drivers. It had medium armour, enough to protect it from infantry guns.

The bipedal propulsion system was one of the primary weaknesses of the AT-ST. While on even terrain the walker could achieve over 90 kilometers per hour, but on uneven or shifting terrain a walker could quickly become unbalanced enough to fall over.

Modified Variants

AT-ST/A

The All Terrain Scout Transport/Assault (AT-ST/A) was a variant of the AT-ST walker.

It was approximately 10 meters tall, and was more heavily armed than its shorter cousin, sporting a large, single-barreled heavy blaster cannon instead of the double medium blaster cannons.

The AT-ST/A's legs had greater reinforcement, and its gyro-stabilizing systems were improved from the original design. It was also fitted with enclosed viewports for added protection of the crew.

AT-ST (Hoth)

The All Terrain Scout Transport (Hoth) was a variant of the All Terrain Scout Transport used by the elite Imperial unit, Blizzard Force.

The walker model's chin cannons had longer barrels, the light blaster cannon was of a different model, the head of the walker was not as blocky as the main design and it was slightly smaller.

The Blizzard Force AT-ST was especially modified for polar climates, as were all the vehicles used on Hoth. It was equipped with ground penetrating sensor equipment that could detect instabilities in the permafrost and relay information back to the heavier vehicles, thus ensuring they avoided unstable ground.

AT-KT

The All Terrain Kashyyyk Transport (AT-KT), also known as the AT-STh ("Hunter") when used on other worlds, was an All Terrain Scout Transport variant.

This variant was equipped with big weapons-mounts fitted to the upper portion of each leg of the walker. They were used in guerilla warfare against Wookiees. The walker was also equipped with large anti-personnel net guns on each side of the cockpit area.

AT-CT

The All Terrain Construction Transport (AT-CT) was an All Terrain Scout Transport variant designed specifically for construction purposes.

Designed around the chassis of the All Terrain Scout Transport, the AT-CT was equipped with small but powerful tractor beam generators used to lift large building materials for construction-related tasks. All other weapons and extraneous systems had to be discarded to focus on this system, but the tractor beam was usable as a weapon. It could pick up heavy items and throw them at enemies. They were often piloted by experienced pilots and gunners for maximum efficiency.

Open-cockpit AT-ST

During the Clone Wars, the first AT-STs were developed. One variant had an open cockpit design, where the pilot and gunner sat one in front of the other.
