Introduction

The Glomar Explorer is a modified Y-8 Mining Vessel owned and operated by Quazaq “Zaq” Jappy.

Service with the CEC

The Glomar Explorer is one of the earliest Y-8 Class Mining Ships of the Corellian Engineering Corporation. Launched at 35 BBY, it was assigned to Captain Adam Bateson for the CEC mining operations at the Kashyykk system. With the excellent leadership of Captain Bateson, the ship performed exceptionally well compared to the other CEC mining vessels. In 16 BBY onwards, the ship was often used as a flagship for some of the most risky and thus profitable mining ventures throughout the galaxy.

Uncertain Fate

At 0 ABY the Glomar Explorer was viciously attacked by space pirates while on a routine mining expedition. While the ship had its fair share of space pirate encounters throughout the years, the damage from this attack was quite severe that the CEC was initially planning to write off the ship. However, Captain Bateson, with his influence and track record within the company, persuaded the CEC to restore the ship to its former glory. In an odd twist of fate, while the ship was being towed for repairs, the captain and its crew was given shore leave to the planet, Alderaan, shortly before it was destroyed by the Death Star.

New Ownership

Without its influential captain, the CEC didn’t see any point in saving the ship so decided to auction the vessel for scrap. The ship was saved when Quinn Jappy, a retiring Imperial pilot, decided to purchase the ship for his new start up mining company. In the next three years, Quinn was restoring the Glomar Explorer slowly whenever he has a chance but with his unexpected death at 3 ABY, the restoration project was put on hold but with most of the basic systems already operational. The ship was inherited by his eldest son, Quazaq "Zaq" Jappy, who continued the restoration and automated most of its systems with the help of old Clone War era Battle Droids acting as its crew.

Rescue of Cravon Wolfgang

The ship participated in the rescue of Outmian Yakta mayor Cravon Wolfgang who was being held by the Blacksun in Coruscant. Zaq offered his ship to be used in the rescue effort to Commander Rhyley Stargazer of the DSE Ghost Squadron. Its old CEC transponder code was used to fool the Coruscanti Orbital Control which enabled the rescue party to arrive at the planet virtually undetected by both Imperial and Blacksun personnel. Although the rescue operation was a complete success, Zaq was shot twice by a Blacksun guard and became severely injured. While Zaq was being treated in the ship's sickbay, Cravon Wolfgang with the help of Deianirrah Sevestis flew the Glomar Explorer to rendezvous with Commander Stargazer and his team to Bespin.

Disappearance

On early 5 ABY, Zaq took the Glomar Explorer on a personal quest to the Karthakk system to find his brother. This was done without official knowledge of DSE or Zaq's fiancee, Kileo Dimoh. The last known communication with the ship was when Sergeant Sornamar Longbow of the 336th tried to contact Zaq to see where he was at and when he will be back home to comfort Kileo. The ship has not been heard off ever since....

Background

The Glomar Explorer is named after a real mining ship, the USNS Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193). It was originally built as part of a secret CIA project to secretly recover a sunken Soviet submarine[1].
