- "“Miss the Old Republic? How can I miss something I never knew…”"
- ~ Excerpt from Kanna’s Imperial Army recruitment interview.
The Child of Hasso and Dela Nightheart, with 2 sisters and 1 younger brother, Kanna parents made a merger living off indenturing contracts to mining companies, moving from one work site and venture to another. Kanna’s family represent an unpleasant fact of the Old Republics decline, and some would say an ever present failure. Far from the core worlds and at the mercy of corporate masters, people like Kanna and his family formed a poor underclass of disenfranchised migrant workers, never able to earn enough to escape the crippling ‘Living expenses’ that companies used to keep their workers ever in debt. Excluded from the democratic and political system given their transient natures, this also meant it was far easier for them to be abused, and far harder for them to seek justice. As Kanna once commented to an arrested agitator who had been speaking at meetings about how the Emperor was now an unelected leader “I never got to vote for any Senator.”
Kanna became imprinted by his parents’ vales from an early age: hard work, determination, lack of complaint, and acceptance of what was. While Kanna fully embraced determination and hard work (In Kanna’s case “You keep at the job till it’s done; you don’t come back till it is.”), he fundamentally rebelled against an acceptance of being handed a life as drudge. Kanna vented this by nurturing a hatred for what he saw as the ‘exploitive’ Republic and the corrupt practices it allowed to happen, as no miner could afford the legal proceedings it took to get justice threw the courts.
And so Kanna waited and brooded, trying to find some way to escape his life that didn’t entail the criminal ways that was consuming so many of his friends. Like so many all this changed with the end of the Old Republic and rise of the New Order. Kanna stood and cheered as the mining operation he was on at the time was nationalised, the ‘corrupt’ officials arrested by the Imperial Army. He cheered too when some time later, after a trial the lead corporate executive was sentenced to death for corruption and treason. The propaganda of the time was like a sirens call to Kanna, a call to sweep away the corrupt Republic and create a new, orderly and powerful Empire. But more than that as far as Kanna was concerned the Empire was his way to become something. When one of the recruitment officers did the rounds of the mining colony, while the officer addressed the small crowd, as far as Kanna was concerned, the officer was talking directly to him:-
“In this time of chaos and rebellion, the Empire needs men and women like you to join the Armed Forces. But not simply to suppress the rebellion and other criminal elements that have emerged, but to build under the Emperors guidance a new, glorious civilisation! We fight here today not for another flawed government like the Old Republic, but a new way of life!”
Kanna hardly paused before trying to join the Imperial Army at hardly minimum age, and to his family’s not exactly happy approval. Kanna failed initially, but his enthusiasm and initial test scores (low on education, but good abilities), saw Kanna further enthralled by the Empire as COMPNOR granted the poorly educated Kanna a education grant (in a military subject of cause), which allowed Kanna to aim for officer training rather than an enlisted rank commission. He proved to be a driven student and after a year graduated out of his education and was accepted in to the Army Special Operations Officer training school.
Kanna has proven to be a loyal, if maverick servant of the Empire; an individual who threw skill and determination has made his way. Kanna lacks the political backers, allies and ‘officer class’ refinements that make up a bulk of the Imperial officer class, meaning he is treated as somewhat of a ‘yokel’ by his peers. However his loyalty to the Empire is unquestioned. Kanna views the Empire simply; it has been the only thing outside of his family that has given him something; pride, respect and prospects. He views the rebels as a mixture of the duped and those who see the restoration of there ‘soft’ lives in the corrupt republic (for aren’t the leaders of the Rebellion the very corrupt senators who benefited most from the Old Republic?)
It’s fair to say Kanna is looking forward to his active service, a chance to distinguish himself, and have revenge…
